Second Hand Shoes
The very first time she saw the shoes Jan shuddered. Second hand shoes. Clothes were fine. She’d bought dresses, skirts and even coats but never shoes, and she didn’t want them. They could have come from anywhere. They could have belonged to anyone. Even a dead woman.
Jan had bought a green suede bag in a sale weeks before and decided she’d love to find some matching shoes but it had been impossible. The shops were overflowing with black ones, and there were plenty of grey too, the in-colour of the season, but asking for green was like asking for the moon until Emma turned up with her gift.
Jan’s friend looked so pleased with herself, finding a pair of shoes in exactly the style and colour Jan had been looking for, and she’d been able to afford to buy them for her because they’d come from a charity shop.
‘Do you like them?’ Emma asked, her face full of hope.
Seeing Emma’s expression, Jan resisted the urge to fling
