World Cup Memories

by Dawn Knox

I’m not a football fan but there’s one match in 1966 I remember clearly.

I need say no more, for it’s gone down in English history.

I was on holiday with my parents and while Mum read by the swimming pool, Dad and I made our way to the hotel’s single television with everyone else to watch the game.

When those words ‘They think it’s all over… It is now!’ were spoken, Dad and I looked at each other in amazement.

Enormous smiles on our faces, we crept out of the silent room leaving the German supporters to their sorrow.
