Palvine Part 11

But still, I could not bear the thought of Sylvester in the arms of another woman. He had been so loving and kind to me. I had loved him so much that now, he was almost all I wanted. Almost. I also found my mind permeated by thoughts of Marius; I wanted to hold him; caress him; feel him inside me – beneath my skin. I was so ashamed to admit I felt this way. I wanted two men; two great men – both great in their own right. Sylvester was a fine, artistic lover who had more flaws than I had thoughts in my mind but Marius was fiery and full of an unshakable passion for life. Even though I had only met him earlier that day, I felt so much for Marius – yet – I also felt so much for Sylvester. Can a man not love two women? Can a woman not love two men?

I couldn’t cope with this place; all the noise; the men; the women; the smoke. It was all too much. I needed to get away. This brothel was too much for me; Paris was too much for me; I was too much for me. In an intoxicated panic, I ran out to the iron ornate balcony which looked out over Rue de la Liberte. Paris was beautiful at night. The Seine glistened with the milky luminance of the oil lamps lining the roads; the light autumn rain sprinkled itself over the uneven pavement; the bells of Notre Dame called out midnight. A new day had begun. Looking out over the city, I found myself a little calmer and began to think how any girl could not feel right in Paris. It was such a strange feeling, being intoxicated. It then caught my eye that there was a girl standing outside the brothel, looking up at the window; it was me; it then caught my other eye that there was a girl looking out over Paris from a high window; and she was me as well. I was all of those people. It felt so strange to me to even think these thoughts as I thought them in my weakened sleepy state. I was harshly awoken from my wondering by a soft whisper.

Palvine Part 10

And then I saw her; Camille. I do not know how I knew it was her but I knew it was her. She had flowing auburn hair to her waist and bright ivory skin coloured slightly by freckling. She danced. Beside Sylvester. Though I was not even entirely sure if she was there but at that moment in my life, nothing felt as real and true within my mind as this. In awe of my own feelings, I stared at the woman for a while, attempting to recollect who she reminded me of. As I looked at her, my thoughts swirled around my mind like delicate black swans in flight, scarcely halting for long enough for my intoxicated brain to make sense of them before they continued froth, along their collision course. For a painfully long moment, I so wished I could be that girl, dancing beside Sylvester.

I drank a little more and turned back to go back into the brothel. This scene; this vision; this apparition was not something I wanted to see anymore. Upon reentering the room – which had no door leading outside which perplexed me- I found myself a lot less shocked at the scene before me, it was almost as if I had somehow lost my innocence in the act of seeing Sylvester dance with that girl. She had been so beautiful. It was a strange feeling; everything about this world which had moved on with me clinging on dearly for life repulsed me – the drinking – the reckless lack of morality – the over liberality in pleasure – everything accept him. He had been the one that I thought of as almost a God, a man of such creative genius – and genius in general – that he actually left me in complete amazement of him: A man of such glamour, charisma and fascination.

Perhaps, I had been so intrigued by Sylvester Spence Palvine that I had forgotten the fact that he was only a man; he had faults as we must all do and I had always known that I could never expect perfection for a person who is less than perfect. And Sylvester was so much less than perfect, I could see that now. I had been blind to his shortcomings.

Palvine Part 9

We walked forth into a room towards the top of the structure. It had a high scarlet ceiling and low arched door less doorway. It was filled with a lofty smoke screen as created by the smoking of hookahs and Cuban cigars. A subtle smell I hadn’t before been aware of smelling permeated the air; a soft scent of jasmine. Sylvester stood beside Marius, though I had not been aware of him joining us and passed me a drink (that I could only assume was alcoholic) that was blush pink in colour and was ensconced in a clean crystalline bulbous glass. I drank deeply, excited to have my inhibitions finally removed from me. I had only ever consumed intoxicants once previously in my short life and that had been on that first February night that I had spent with Sylvester; the night I had lost my virginity.

The three of us walked together further into the room and allowed our eyes to adjust to the strange dulled smoky light.

I was shocked by what my eyes saw; men with brazen naked bodies making love to girls and people happily swapping and going between partners. I had always regarded myself as a very open minded person until this night where I found myself drinking heavily blush cocktail after blush cocktail simply so I would believe what was so clearly before. It was so strange to me to see that my world – the world I had come from- was so at odds with the world in which I now lived. It was as if time had moved on and I hadn’t. I stood almost my soul apart from my body and watched as Sylvester kissed my form and Marius watched eagerly. I felt it. His eyes. His touch. Everything. It was almost as if I was both within and without myself. It was strange for I had never felt not in control of my own actions before. I wanted so much to leave this place of wonder and stay forever.

As I and Sylvester went further and further I suddenly became aware I could see a garden, though, I couldn’t find it again and have no real justification for knowing it was there. But I was there. It was the garden of evil and I was an angel. The windows of the room flung wide open and allowed all the bright lights and noise and merriment of the amusement outside in the garden to enter the busy room. A huge carousel stood with flashing lights all around the crest in a multitude of colours which cast their own limelight down upon the men and girls as they spun ever round and round. Always seeking more. Forever. Eternally. Hair flowing in the dull breeze whipping it back as they flew in their sickening cycle. The inanimate horses towered in shades of black and grey with bright saddles and reigns and harnesses as they flew about with angry cursed looks of furious horror plastered upon their faces and their manes and tails projected in a place of perpetual movement with their hollow muscular legs and harsh hooves raised high as if galloping. As the carousel whirled, a chilling high-pitched waltz played from an unknown source up above. A sick herald to the heavens. The visitors on the carousel beneath gossiped and giggled as they spun their sickly pattern as a break neck pace with an oddly angry cursed looks of furious horror plastered upon their faces beneath their stupid painted smiles.
