Embracing New Technology

Coca Cola

‘It’s no good,’ said the witch with a cackle, ‘you won’t get a signal here in the forest.’

‘Wrong!’ said Gretel, holding up her mobile phone.

‘She’s sent Dad a text. He’ll be here shortly,’ said Hansel.

‘Bah! I’m starving and you looked so juicy!’ said the witch, collapsing on her chair, ‘when my blood sugar drops, I get really grumpy.’

‘Well, what d’you fancy?’ asked Gretel.

The witch drooled as she listed things she’d like to eat, ‘Sausages, custard, doughnuts, chips…’

‘Done,’ said Gretel, her fingers flying over her phone, ‘Tescado should be delivering your order within the hour.’

Ain’t She Sweet

Alan Cadman

A bottle of Coca-Cola with a paper straw

I loosen my collar; I’m going to be late. The city is heaving with lunchtime traffic. Promising me a mind blowing experience, she’d asked me to meet her in a converted cellar. I descend the narrow steps as fast as I can. Hideous noises grow louder. It’s not what I expected.
As I enter, the place is crammed with excited teenagers; condensation dripping down walls. All eyes are focused on four young men. She squeezes my arm and assures me that, in the near future, they will be world famous.
I’m not impressed and reply, ‘Who, exactly, are The Beatles?’
